About Khao Yai
Khao Yai National Park has wild elephants, waterfalls, vineyards and cool-season resorts.
Khao Yai is Thailand’s oldest national park and part of a UNESCO-listed forest complex in the north-east, around Pak Chong in Nakhon Ratchasima province. The park protects evergreen forest, grassland and waterfalls home to wild elephants, gibbons and hornbills, while the area outside the park has become a weekend getaway full of resorts, farm stays, cafés and vineyards. Temperatures are often several degrees cooler than on the coast, especially in the early morning.
People travel between Hua Hin and Khao Yai to swap the beach for cooler air and wildlife. Families like the farm attractions and open space, couples choose a vineyard resort, and nature lovers book a guided safari to spot animals. It is a long cross-country trip, so a comfortable private car with flexible stops makes much more sense than combining buses through Bangkok. Many resorts are spread out, so the driver can drop you at the door.
