About Surat Thani
Surat Thani is the southern transport hub with an airport, railway station and ferries to the islands.
Surat Thani is a large provincial city on the Tapi River and the main gateway to the islands of Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Few visitors stay long, but the town has busy night markets, riverside food and easy access to some of the south’s best sights, including the rainforest of Khao Sok and the ancient temple at Chaiya.
People travel between Hua Hin and Surat Thani to catch a flight, a train or a ferry to the islands, or to start a trip across to the Andaman coast. A private car is useful because the city’s airport, railway station and ferry piers are spread across a wide area, often far from the town centre. It is also a sensible overnight stop on longer trips towards Krabi, Khao Lak or Nakhon Si Thammarat, splitting the drive into two comfortable days.
Things to see and do in Surat Thani

The road between Hua Hin and Surat Thani
The drive between Hua Hin and Surat Thani heads south on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and the Bang Saphan area to Chumphon. South of Chumphon the route generally switches to Highway 41, which runs down the east side of the peninsula past Lang Suan and Chaiya into Surat Thani province. Both highways are mostly wide dual carriageway, with long straight stretches through rubber and palm plantations. Traffic is usually moderate, though it builds near towns and around holiday periods.
Good places to stop on the way
- Prachuap Khiri Khan, for a seaside lunch
- Bang Saphan, with its quiet beaches
- Chumphon, roughly halfway along the route
- Chaiya and its ancient temple
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Surat Thani
The route can be driven all year. The east coast’s heaviest rain normally falls from about October to December, which can slow driving and affect ferries to the islands. Leaving Hua Hin in the morning gets you to Surat Thani in daylight. Allow extra time around Songkran and New Year, when the southern highways are busier. Night markets in town make an evening arrival enjoyable.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Surat Thani
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
