About Don Mueang
Don Mueang is Bangkok’s low-cost airport, used by AirAsia, Thai Lion Air and Nok Air for domestic and regional flights.
Don Mueang International Airport sits on the northern edge of Bangkok, about 25 kilometres from the city centre, and was the capital’s main airport before Suvarnabhumi opened in 2006. Today it handles a heavy flow of budget flights to Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Udon Thani and short regional hops to neighbouring countries. Its two terminals, one international and one domestic, are compact and easy to navigate once you arrive.
Travellers from Hua Hin use Don Mueang when a low-cost fare to the north, the islands or elsewhere in Asia beats flying from Suvarnabhumi. Because it lies on the far side of Bangkok, the drive is longer than many visitors expect, and catching public transport across the city with luggage is tiring. A door-to-door car from your hotel to the terminal kerb removes the transfers and the guesswork about connections.

The road between Hua Hin and Don Mueang
The drive between Hua Hin and Don Mueang follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) north through Cha-am and Phetchaburi, then usually joins Rama II Road (Highway 35) through Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon into Bangkok. From there the route uses the city’s elevated expressways and the Don Mueang Tollway, which runs above Vibhavadi Rangsit Road to the airport. Tolls are part of the journey. Traffic is light along the coast but can build heavily on Rama II and inside Bangkok during weekday rush hours and on Friday and Sunday evenings, so the Bangkok section is the part that varies most.
Good places to stop on the way
- Cha-am, for a coffee break near the beach early in the drive
- Phetchaburi, known for its traditional Thai desserts
- Large fuel stations with cafés and clean toilets along Rama II Road
- Samut Songkhram, if you want a short break before entering Bangkok traffic
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Don Mueang
Flights run all year, so the main thing to plan around is Bangkok traffic. Early-morning departures from Hua Hin usually have the clearest roads, while weekday rush hours and the return flow on Sunday evenings are slowest. Allow extra time around Songkran in April and the New Year holiday, when many Bangkok residents drive to and from the provinces. Heavy afternoon rain in the wet season, roughly May to October, can also slow the expressways.
Travel tip for Don Mueang
Traffic on the Don Mueang tollway is lighter early in the morning; for an evening flight leave Hua Hin with at least an hour of margin.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Don Mueang
Airport buses run on fixed timetables and stop at bus terminals. A private car is planned around your flight and takes you straight to the terminal.
