About Prachuap
Prachuap town has a beautiful bay, Ao Manao beach on an air-force base and the monkey-filled Khao Chong Krachok.
Prachuap Khiri Khan is the small, easy-going capital of the province that also contains Hua Hin. The town curves around a wide bay framed by limestone headlands, with a seafront promenade, colourful fishing boats and a relaxed pace that feels a world away from busier resorts. Evenings bring a lively night market and fresh seafood at simple restaurants facing the water. Fishing boats still unload their catch along the bay each morning.
Visitors from Hua Hin come for a slower, more local side of Thailand: a clean swimming beach, a temple-topped hill with views and a town where tourism has not taken over. It suits couples, families and long-stay visitors looking for a day trip south, and it also works as a stopover on the way towards Chumphon and the southern islands. Accommodation is mostly small hotels and guesthouses near the water.

The road between Hua Hin and Prachuap
The drive between Hua Hin and Prachuap Khiri Khan follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) south for almost the whole distance. From Hua Hin the highway passes Pranburi, the turn-offs for Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park and Kui Buri, and then runs through pineapple and coconut country, with the mountains on the Myanmar border visible to the west. It is a wide, well-maintained dual carriageway with light traffic for most of the day. Only the last few kilometres use local roads into town and to the bay.
Good places to stop on the way
- Pranburi, a short way south of Hua Hin
- Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, a short detour towards the coast
- Kui Buri and the turn-off for the national park
- Roadside fruit stalls selling local pineapples
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Prachuap
Prachuap is pleasant all year, but the drier months from about December to April give the clearest skies for Ao Manao and the views from Khao Chong Krachok. Mornings are best for swimming and climbing the hill before the heat. Thai holidays bring more visitors, though the town rarely feels crowded. In the wet season, showers usually pass quickly and the highway stays reliable.
Travel tip for Prachuap
A relaxed day trip: Ao Manao in the morning, seafood on the bay at lunch.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Prachuap
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
