About Phetchaburi

Phetchaburi has the hilltop palace of Phra Nakhon Khiri (Khao Wang), cave temples and famous desserts.

Phetchaburi is one of Thailand’s oldest provincial towns, with a skyline of temple roofs and a royal palace on the hill above it. Its history reaches back to the Dvaravati and Ayutthaya periods, and many of its temples hold fine old murals and stucco work. The town is also famous for khanom mor kaeng and other palm-sugar desserts sold in shops along the main road.

From Hua Hin it is an ideal half-day or full-day cultural trip for anyone who wants temples, history and local food rather than beaches. Families enjoy the cable car up Khao Wang, photographers love the cave temple at Tham Khao Luang, and many travellers stop here on the way between Hua Hin and Bangkok. It also works well as a combined trip with Cha-am, since the two towns lie close together on the same road.

The road between Hua Hin and Phetchaburi

The drive between Hua Hin and Phetchaburi follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) north. Leaving Hua Hin the highway passes the long row of resorts towards Cha-am, then Cha-am town itself and the market town of Tha Yang before reaching Phetchaburi. The road is a wide dual carriageway with frequent fuel stations. Traffic is generally light, though it can slow near Cha-am at weekends and in Phetchaburi town around school and market hours. Phetchaburi’s main sights are a few minutes apart, so the driver can move you between them easily.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Cha-am beach for a short seaside break
  • Mrigadayavan Palace between Hua Hin and Cha-am
  • Tha Yang market town
  • Puek Tian beach, a quieter stretch of coast near Tha Yang

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Phetchaburi

Phetchaburi can be visited all year. The cool months from November to February are most comfortable for climbing Khao Wang and walking around temples. Go early in the day for the palace, then visit Tham Khao Luang when the light comes through the cave roof. Weekends bring Thai families and busier dessert shops, and rain in the wet season usually falls in the afternoon.

Travel tip for Phetchaburi

Add Tham Khao Luang cave temple — the light through the roof is best around midday.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Phetchaburi

Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.

Choose your car

Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
