About Koh Samet
Koh Samet is the closest white-sand island to Bangkok, reached by a 30–40 minute boat from Ban Phe.
Koh Samet is a small, slender island off Rayong province, protected as part of a national park and fringed with bays of fine white sand. Sai Kaew Beach in the north-east is the liveliest, with restaurants and evening fire shows, while bays such as Ao Wong Duean, Ao Thian and Ao Prao feel quieter. The island is compact enough to explore by songthaew or on foot.
Its appeal is that it feels like a proper tropical island without the long journey south. Thai families, Bangkok weekenders and overseas visitors come for clear water, snorkelling and seafood on the sand. From Hua Hin, Samet suits travellers who want a short island break on the eastern seaboard, or a change of scene before heading on to Bangkok or Pattaya. Accommodation ranges from simple bungalows to comfortable resorts.

The road between Hua Hin and Koh Samet
The drive between Hua Hin and Ban Phe Pier is one of the longer coastal transfers. It heads north on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Cha-am and Phetchaburi, joins Rama II Road (Highway 35) towards Bangkok and then skirts the city on the outer ring road or expressways to the east. Motorway 7 and the eastern highways continue past Chonburi towards Rayong, ending at Ban Phe on the coast. From the pier the boat leg to Samet is separate, with speedboats and slower ferries to the different beaches. Traffic is heaviest around Bangkok and on holiday weekends.
Good places to stop on the way
- Phetchaburi, an easy first break with famous desserts
- Rama II Road fuel stations and rest areas
- Motorway 7 service areas
- Bang Saen beach in Chonburi
- Rayong town, close to the end of the drive
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Koh Samet
The best weather on Samet is usually from November to April, when the sea is calmer and skies clearer. Weekends and Thai public holidays bring crowds of Bangkok visitors, so a midweek trip is more relaxed and the roads are lighter. Plan to reach Ban Phe in daylight so you have plenty of boat choices. During the wet season, roughly May to October, showers are frequent but the island stays open.
