About Koh Chang
Koh Chang is Thailand’s third-largest island, with jungle, waterfalls and long beaches near the Cambodian border.
Koh Chang sits in the Gulf of Thailand off Trat province, close to the Cambodian border. Much of the island is protected as part of a marine national park, so its steep, forested interior remains largely wild, while a ring road links beaches along the west coast and quieter villages in the east and south. The island has kept a more natural feel than many Thai resorts, with mangroves, rocky headlands and only a few roads climbing over its steep hills.
It attracts families, couples and backpackers who want a slower island stay than Phuket or Samui, with resorts ranging from simple bungalows to upmarket hotels. Travellers from Hua Hin often head here to switch from the Gulf’s west coast to a greener, more rugged island, and a car with luggage space makes the long journey and ferry connection much easier. Once on the island, songthaew pick-up trucks run along the ring road, and many resorts can arrange transfers from the ferry landing if you ask in advance.

The road between Hua Hin and Koh Chang
The drive between Hua Hin and Koh Chang crosses much of central and eastern Thailand. Cars use Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) and Rama II Road (Highway 35) towards Bangkok, skirt the city on the outer ring roads and expressways, then follow Motorway 7 and highways east through Chonburi and Rayong towards Chanthaburi and Trat. The last leg runs to the car-ferry piers at Laem Ngop, where ferries cross to the island; check the latest ferry times before you travel. Expect a full day on the road, with Bangkok traffic the biggest variable.
