About Kui Buri

Kui Buri National Park is one of the best places in Thailand to see wild elephants and gaur, on afternoon safari drives with park rangers.

Kui Buri National Park covers forested hills along the Tenasserim range on the Myanmar border in Prachuap Khiri Khan province. The park’s grasslands and water holes attract herds of wild Asian elephants and gaur, the huge wild cattle, especially in the late afternoon. Visitors join ranger-led safari drives, usually in open pick-up trucks, along tracks to viewing areas. The park’s conservation work has helped restore habitat for the elephants.

Travellers from Hua Hin come for one of Thailand’s best chances to see wild elephants in their natural home rather than in a camp. It suits families, wildlife lovers and photographers who want an ethical encounter. The park’s safari area is reached from the Ruam Thai area inland from Kui Buri. Visits are carefully managed by rangers to protect both the animals and visitors, which is part of what makes the experience feel authentic and responsible.

The road between Hua Hin and Kui Buri

The drive between Hua Hin and Kui Buri National Park heads south on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) past Pranburi and the turn-off for Sam Roi Yot. Near Kui Buri town the route turns inland on smaller rural roads, passing pineapple and palm plantations towards the hills and the park’s safari area. Traffic is light on the highway, and the local roads are quiet but narrow in places, so driving carefully after dark matters on the return. The safari area is a long way from shops, so bring water and snacks.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Pranburi, just south of Hua Hin
  • Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, a short detour
  • Kui Buri town for a meal
  • Roadside pineapple stalls

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Kui Buri

Elephants can be seen all year, but sightings are often best in the late afternoon when animals come out to feed. The dry season makes tracks easier, while the green season brings lush scenery. Bring insect repellent and a light jacket for the return drive. Sightings are never guaranteed, as these are wild animals. Return drives after dark are slow on rural roads, so allow extra time. Pack binoculars, insect repellent and a light layer for the evening.

Travel tip for Kui Buri

Wildlife drives start in the afternoon; leave Hua Hin around 1–2 pm and return after dark.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Kui Buri

National parks and nature areas have little or no public transport. A private car lets you stop at viewpoints, waterfalls and cafés on the way.
