About Pattaya
Pattaya is the busiest beach city on the Gulf’s eastern shore, with Jomtien, Walking Street, Sanctuary of Truth and Nong Nooch garden.
Pattaya grew from a fishing village into one of Thailand’s best-known resort cities, and today it offers a mix that few places match: a busy beachfront, the quieter strand at Jomtien, large shopping malls, golf courses, theme parks and a famous nightlife strip. Families, golfers, retirees and party-goers all find their own corner, and the islands of Koh Larn sit a short boat ride offshore.
Many people link Hua Hin and Pattaya into one holiday, spending a few days on each side of the Gulf of Thailand. Others in Hua Hin make the trip to visit friends, play a round on Chonburi’s well-known courses or swap a calm beach for livelier evenings. Because there is no reliable daily bridge across the water, a private car is the simplest way to switch coasts with luggage.

- Jomtien Beach for a calmer stretch of sand south of the city

The road between Hua Hin and Pattaya
The drive between Hua Hin and Pattaya goes around the top of the Gulf rather than across it. From Hua Hin the road runs north on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Cha-am and Phetchaburi, then joins Rama II Road (Highway 35) towards Bangkok. Instead of entering the city centre, the route uses Bangkok’s outer ring road or expressways to cross to the east, then follows Motorway 7 towards Chonburi and Pattaya. Most of the trip is on wide dual carriageway. The slowest part is normally the Bangkok outskirts, especially at weekday rush hours and on holiday weekends.
Good places to stop on the way
- Phetchaburi, for Khao Wang palace or a dessert stop
- Rest areas and fuel stations along Rama II Road
- Motorway 7 service areas between Bangkok and Chonburi
- Bang Saen, Chonburi’s seaside town close to the motorway
- Si Racha, known for its seafront and Koh Si Chang boats
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Pattaya
Pattaya and Hua Hin share the same dry, pleasant season from about November to February, which is also the busiest. March to May is hot, and from roughly May to October afternoon showers are common but rarely stop a road trip. Leaving early in the morning avoids the worst Bangkok traffic. Long weekends, Songkran in April and New Year bring heavy traffic on Rama II and the motorway, so allow extra time on those dates.
Travel tip for Pattaya
The road goes around the Gulf via the outer Bangkok ring road. The seasonal Pattaya–Hua Hin ferry does not always run, so a car is the reliable all-year option.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Buses and minivans run on fixed timetables from bus terminals, often with a change in Bangkok. A private car goes door to door, so you arrive at your resort without carrying bags between stations.
Choose your car
Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
