About Koh Chang

Koh Chang is Thailand’s third-largest island, with jungle, waterfalls and long beaches near the Cambodian border.

Koh Chang sits in the Gulf of Thailand off Trat province, close to the Cambodian border. Much of the island is protected as part of a marine national park, so its steep, forested interior remains largely wild, while a ring road links beaches along the west coast and quieter villages in the east and south. The island has kept a more natural feel than many Thai resorts, with mangroves, rocky headlands and only a few roads climbing over its steep hills.

It attracts families, couples and backpackers who want a slower island stay than Phuket or Samui, with resorts ranging from simple bungalows to upmarket hotels. Travellers from Hua Hin often head here to switch from the Gulf’s west coast to a greener, more rugged island, and a car with luggage space makes the long journey and ferry connection much easier. Once on the island, songthaew pick-up trucks run along the ring road, and many resorts can arrange transfers from the ferry landing if you ask in advance.

Things to see and do in Koh Chang

  • White Sand Beach, the island’s busiest stretch of sand and resorts
  • Klong Prao and Kai Bae beaches on the west coast
  • Lonely Beach, popular with younger travellers
  • Bang Bao, a fishing village built on stilts over the water
  • Klong Plu waterfall in the island’s interior
  • Snorkelling trips to the smaller islands of the Mu Ko Chang archipelago
  • Salak Phet and the quieter south-east coast

Ferry connection

Your car crosses on the car ferry from Ao Thammachat / Centrepoint pier, Trat and drives you to your hotel on the island — the ferry fare is included in the price.

The road between Hua Hin and Koh Chang

The drive between Hua Hin and Koh Chang crosses much of central and eastern Thailand. Cars use Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) and Rama II Road (Highway 35) towards Bangkok, skirt the city on the outer ring roads and expressways, then follow Motorway 7 and highways east through Chonburi and Rayong towards Chanthaburi and Trat. The last leg runs to the car-ferry piers at Laem Ngop, where ferries cross to the island; check the latest ferry times before you travel. Expect a full day on the road, with Bangkok traffic the biggest variable.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Pattaya or Rayong for lunch
  • Chanthaburi, known for its gem market and riverside old town
  • Trat town, a relaxed gateway with a night market
  • Laem Ngop’s waterfront while waiting for the ferry

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Koh Chang

The best time to visit Koh Chang is from November to April, when seas are calmer and skies clearer. The eastern seaboard receives heavy rain from roughly May to October, when some beaches become rough and quieter. Leave Hua Hin early in the morning to reach the pier in daylight, and avoid ending the trip on a public-holiday Sunday, when roads around Bangkok are congested.

Travel tip for Koh Chang

It is a long day; most guests leave Hua Hin early in the morning to catch an afternoon car ferry.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Koh Chang

Flights and buses usually mean several changes plus a separate transfer to the pier. With a private car you leave from your hotel door and arrive at the pier with your luggage, on your schedule.

Choose your car

Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
