About Rayong
Rayong has quiet beaches, fruit orchards and the Ban Phe pier for Koh Samet.
Rayong is a province on the Eastern Gulf coast, south-east of Pattaya. It is best known to Thais for its fruit orchards, fresh seafood and long, relaxed beaches such as Mae Ramphueng, which feel far less built-up than Pattaya. Industrial estates sit inland, but the coastline between Rayong town and Ban Phe is a favourite weekend escape for Bangkok families.
Travellers go from Hua Hin to Rayong mainly to reach Koh Samet, the closest island beach to Bangkok, or to combine the two Gulf coasts into one trip. Others visit for the fruit season, to see friends working on the Eastern Seaboard, or to continue on towards Chanthaburi and Koh Chang. A private car avoids changing buses in Bangkok, which is the usual sticking point on this cross-country journey.

The road between Hua Hin and Rayong
The drive between Hua Hin and Rayong runs north on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) to Phetchaburi, then along Rama II Road (Highway 35) towards Bangkok. Rather than entering the city centre, drivers usually take the outer ring road and the expressway system east to Motorway 7 towards Chonburi, then continue past Pattaya on Highway 36 into Rayong. It is a long day but almost all of it is on major highways. The slowest parts are normally Rama II and the junctions around Bangkok, where rush hour and holiday traffic can add considerable time. Fuel stations and rest areas along Motorway 7 make convenient short breaks.
Good places to stop on the way
- Phetchaburi town and Phra Nakhon Khiri
- Maeklong Railway Market in Samut Songkhram
- Bang Saen beach near Chonburi
- Pattaya and the Sanctuary of Truth
- Sattahip and Nong Nooch Garden
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Rayong
November to April is the driest time on the Eastern Gulf and the best time for Koh Samet. The rainy season brings afternoon storms but rarely stops the drive. Leaving Hua Hin early in the morning means passing Bangkok before the evening rush. Avoid Friday evenings and the first day of long holidays if possible, when Motorway 7 and Rama II fill up with weekend traffic.
Travel tip for Rayong
Durian and mangosteen season (May–June) makes Rayong’s orchards a good stop.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Buses and minivans run on fixed timetables from bus terminals, often with a change in Bangkok. A private car goes door to door, so you arrive at your resort without carrying bags between stations.
Choose your car
Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
