About Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the capital of the north, with the old walled city, Doi Suthep and night markets.
Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, set in a valley surrounded by mountains. Its old city, enclosed by a moat and remains of brick walls, is packed with temples, cafés and guesthouses. Beyond the moat lie craft villages, night markets, and the hills of Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon. The city is also a base for trekking, elephant sanctuaries and cooking schools.
Travelling between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai by road is a choice for people relocating, carrying lots of luggage or pets, or simply wanting to see the country on the way. Others make it a multi-day road trip with stops in Ayutthaya, Sukhothai or Lampang. A private car with a trusted driver turns a long journey into a comfortable one, with the freedom to stop wherever you like. Many families relocating north also bring household items that would not fit on a plane.

Best time to travel to Chiang Mai
November to February is the best time in Chiang Mai, with cool nights and festivals such as Loy Krathong and Yi Peng. March and April bring hazy skies from agricultural burning. For a journey this long, one overnight stop or two drivers is safer than pushing through. Avoid leaving on the first day of long holidays, when Bangkok exits are congested.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Chiang Mai
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
Choose your car
Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
