About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is the capital of the north, with the old walled city, Doi Suthep and night markets.

Chiang Mai is the cultural capital of northern Thailand, set in a valley surrounded by mountains. Its old city, enclosed by a moat and remains of brick walls, is packed with temples, cafés and guesthouses. Beyond the moat lie craft villages, night markets, and the hills of Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon. The city is also a base for trekking, elephant sanctuaries and cooking schools.

Travelling between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai by road is a choice for people relocating, carrying lots of luggage or pets, or simply wanting to see the country on the way. Others make it a multi-day road trip with stops in Ayutthaya, Sukhothai or Lampang. A private car with a trusted driver turns a long journey into a comfortable one, with the freedom to stop wherever you like. Many families relocating north also bring household items that would not fit on a plane.

The road between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai

The drive between Hua Hin and Chiang Mai is a long one. From Hua Hin, it follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) and Rama II Road (Highway 35) towards Bangkok, then around the city and north on Highway 1 and Highway 32 past Ayutthaya to Nakhon Sawan. From there Highway 1 continues through Kamphaeng Phet and Tak to Lampang, and Highway 11 completes the journey to Chiang Mai. Most of the route is multi-lane highway; the mountainous section past Tak and Lampang is slower. Coffee shops and service areas are plentiful along the main highways.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Ayutthaya Historical Park
  • Nakhon Sawan
  • Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park
  • Sukhothai Historical Park (a detour from Tak)
  • Lampang with its horse-drawn carriages

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Chiang Mai

November to February is the best time in Chiang Mai, with cool nights and festivals such as Loy Krathong and Yi Peng. March and April bring hazy skies from agricultural burning. For a journey this long, one overnight stop or two drivers is safer than pushing through. Avoid leaving on the first day of long holidays, when Bangkok exits are congested.

Travel tip for Chiang Mai

For a long one-way trip like this, a van with two drivers or an overnight stop is the safe option — ask us.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin

Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.

Choose your car

Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
