About Bang Saphan
Bang Saphan is the jumping-off point for Koh Thalu and its snorkelling.
Bang Saphan is a quiet district in the south of Prachuap Khiri Khan province, with long, uncrowded beaches, fishing villages and a scattering of small resorts. It feels like Hua Hin decades ago: simple seafood restaurants by the sand, few high-rises and very little nightlife, which is exactly why its regular visitors love it. Accommodation ranges from simple bungalows to comfortable family resorts near the beach.
Most people travel between Hua Hin and Bang Saphan for a slower beach break, to dive and snorkel around Koh Thalu and the nearby islands, or to visit friends and family who have settled along this coast. Some combine it with Prachuap town on the way. Since trains stop only occasionally and buses drop you on the highway, a door-to-door car is the easiest way to reach beachfront resorts. Long-stay visitors also like its lower prices and slower pace.

The road between Hua Hin and Bang Saphan
The drive between Hua Hin and Bang Saphan runs south on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Pranburi, Kui Buri, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Thap Sakae, before turning off towards the coast at Bang Saphan. Highway 4 is a wide dual carriageway for nearly all of the route, with the mountains of the Myanmar border on one side and coconut plantations on the other. Traffic is generally light outside town centres, though long-distance trucks and buses use the road day and night. Rest stops and coffee shops at petrol stations break the drive conveniently.
Good places to stop on the way
- Prachuap Khiri Khan town and Ao Manao bay
- Khao Chong Krachok, the monkey mountain in Prachuap
- Thap Sakae beach and local market
- Kui Buri, near the elephant-watching national park
- Huai Yang waterfall near Thap Sakae
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Bang Saphan
December to April offers the calmest sea and best snorkelling visibility. The Gulf coast here gets less rain than the Andaman side during the south-west monsoon, but storms are more common towards October and November. Daytime travel is recommended on Highway 4 because of truck traffic at night. Thai holidays fill the small resorts quickly, so book rooms early.
Travel tip for Bang Saphan
For Koh Thalu, ask your resort for the boat time and we plan the pickup around it.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Buses and minivans run on fixed timetables from bus terminals, often with a change in Bangkok. A private car goes door to door, so you arrive at your resort without carrying bags between stations.
