About Erawan Waterfall

Erawan National Park’s seven-tiered waterfall has emerald pools you can swim in, one of Thailand’s most beautiful falls.

Erawan National Park lies in the forested hills of Kanchanaburi province, west of Bangkok. Its famous waterfall tumbles down seven tiers through the jungle, each with limestone pools of turquoise water where visitors swim among small fish. The upper tiers require a steeper walk, which keeps them quieter than the lower ones. The park’s forest trails are home to monkeys and birds, and the fish in the pools are known for nibbling swimmers’ feet, which delights most children.

It is a favourite with families, hikers and photographers, and travellers from Hua Hin usually combine it with Kanchanaburi town, the Bridge on the River Kwai and the area’s wartime history. An overnight stay makes the trip relaxed, leaving time for the waterfall in the morning before the crowds. Kanchanaburi province is full of other attractions too, from more waterfalls and caves to riverside resorts, so many travellers stay for two or three nights.

  • Srinagarind Dam and reservoir further up the road

The road between Hua Hin and Erawan Waterfall

The drive between Hua Hin and Erawan follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) north through Cha-am, Phetchaburi and Ratchaburi province to Ban Pong. There the route turns onto Highway 323 to Kanchanaburi town, then Highway 3199 north-west along the river valley towards the national park. The highways are good; the last section is quieter and more scenic, with forested hills. Traffic is usually light beyond Ban Pong, though Kanchanaburi gets busy at weekends with visitors from Bangkok.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Phetchaburi
  • Ratchaburi
  • Ban Pong
  • Kanchanaburi town and the River Kwai Bridge

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Erawan Waterfall

The waterfall looks its best towards the end of the rainy season and into the cool season, roughly October to January, when the pools are full. The dry season from February to April has lower water but clear pools. Arrive in the morning, as the park has set opening hours and grows busy later. Weekends and Thai holidays bring crowds. Bring swimwear, water shoes and a towel, and keep valuables to a minimum.

Travel tip for Erawan Waterfall

Combine with the River Kwai Bridge and stay a night in Kanchanaburi rather than doing it as a day trip.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Erawan Waterfall

National parks and nature areas have little or no public transport. A private car lets you stop at viewpoints, waterfalls and cafés on the way.
