About Khao Wang

Phra Nakhon Khiri is a 19th-century hilltop palace above Phetchaburi town, reached by cable car.

Phra Nakhon Khiri, known locally as Khao Wang, is a palace complex built for King Mongkut (Rama IV) across three hilltops above Phetchaburi. Its mix of Thai, Chinese and European architecture, white-and-red buildings and wide views over town make it one of the region’s most rewarding historical sites, with resident monkeys adding to the experience. The site offers sweeping views over Phetchaburi’s rooftops, temples and the surrounding countryside, especially fine on clear days in the cool season.

It is a classic day trip from Hua Hin for travellers interested in history, temples and Thai food. Phetchaburi is famous for its traditional desserts, and the town’s old temples and nearby cave shrine make it easy to fill a relaxed day before returning to the beach. Phetchaburi town itself is well preserved, with wooden shophouses, a riverside market and dozens of historic temples that reward a slow wander.
