About Phraya Nakhon Cave

Phraya Nakhon Cave holds the famous royal pavilion lit by a beam of sunlight, reached by a short boat or hike from Bang Pu beach.

Phraya Nakhon Cave lies inside Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, south of Hua Hin, where limestone mountains meet the sea. The large cave has collapsed sections in its roof, letting sunlight and trees inside, and its centrepiece is the Khuha Kharuehat Pavilion, built for a visit by King Chulalongkorn. It is one of the most photographed sights in Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

Visitors from Hua Hin come for photography, a hike and a beach day in one trip. The trail starts at Bang Pu beach or neighbouring Laem Sala beach and includes a steep, rocky climb, so it suits reasonably fit adults and older children. The rest of the national park offers viewpoints, wetlands and birdwatching. An early start avoids the worst of the heat on the climb.

The road between Hua Hin and Phraya Nakhon Cave

The drive between Hua Hin and Phraya Nakhon Cave starts south on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) past Pranburi. It then turns towards the coast on local roads into Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park, passing shrimp ponds, wetlands and limestone peaks before reaching the parking area at Bang Pu. From the beach, visitors either hike over the headland or take a boat to Laem Sala, then climb up to the cave. Traffic is usually light, though the park roads can be busy on holiday weekends. Bang Pu has a small village with simple restaurants and drinks.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Pranburi, just south of Hua Hin

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Phraya Nakhon Cave

The cool, dry season from about November to February is most comfortable for the climb. Light shines into the cave’s main chamber best in the late morning, so many people plan to arrive then. Weekends and holidays are busier on the trail. In the wet season the paths can be slippery, and boats may not run if the sea is rough.
