About Siam

Siam and Pratunam are Bangkok’s shopping heart: Siam Paragon, MBK, CentralWorld and the Pratunam wholesale market.

Siam and Pratunam form the commercial heart of Bangkok. Around Siam Square sit giant malls such as Siam Paragon, Siam Center and MBK, while CentralWorld and the Ratchaprasong intersection lead on to Pratunam, a maze of wholesale clothing stalls, the Platinum Fashion Mall and the Baiyoke Tower. The area is linked by Skytrain stations and covered walkways, so moving between malls is easy once you arrive, and hotels of every level are within walking distance.

Hua Hin residents and visitors travel here for serious shopping, electronics, fashion and books not found at the beach, or simply to enjoy a city break with good hotels on the Skytrain. Others travel the other way after a few nights in central Bangkok, heading for the sea. A door-to-door car avoids dragging suitcases and shopping bags through stations and taxi queues. The return trip can be timed for the evening, after the last shop closes.

Things to see and do in Siam

  • Siam Paragon and its aquarium
  • MBK Center for phones, gadgets and souvenirs
  • CentralWorld and Ratchaprasong
  • Platinum Fashion Mall and Pratunam market
  • Erawan Shrine at Ratchaprasong
  • Jim Thompson House near National Stadium
  • Baiyoke Tower viewpoint

  • Fuel and expressway tolls included in the price
  • Toilet, food and photo stops on request

The road between Hua Hin and Siam

The drive between Hua Hin and Siam runs north on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) to Phetchaburi, then along Rama II Road (Highway 35) through Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon to Bangkok. From there the driver usually takes the elevated expressway into the city centre, exiting near Ratchaprasong or Phaya Thai. The highway sections are straightforward, but central Bangkok is congested at most times, and Rama II has ongoing roadworks. Allow extra time for the final few kilometres, especially on weekday evenings.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Cha-am beach
  • Phetchaburi town
  • Maeklong Railway Market
  • Mahachai in Samut Sakhon for seafood

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Siam

Shopping is an all-weather activity, so any season works, though the rainy season from roughly June to October can make Bangkok traffic worse during heavy afternoon showers. Mid-morning departures and arriving before the evening peak make the journey quicker. Thai holidays, especially New Year and Songkran, bring busy highways, but central Bangkok itself becomes noticeably quieter. Many visitors combine shopping with a medical or dental appointment, a show or a restaurant booking in the same trip.

Travel tip for Siam

Shopping bags take space — a van or SUV is worth it for the trip back to Hua Hin.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin

Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.

Choose your car

Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
