About Sukhumvit
Sukhumvit Road is Bangkok’s main hotel and nightlife strip, from Nana and Asok to Thong Lo and Ekkamai.
Sukhumvit is the long spine of modern Bangkok, running east from the city centre through a string of neighbourhoods that each have their own character. Lower Sukhumvit around Nana and Asok is busy, international and packed with hotels, while Phrom Phong, Thong Lo and Ekkamai feel more residential, with cafés, Japanese restaurants, rooftop bars and expat apartment blocks. Street food carts, international restaurants and late-night bars sit side by side, so the area stays busy from early morning until well after midnight.
People travel between Hua Hin and Sukhumvit for all sorts of reasons: a weekend of shopping and dining in the capital, a hotel night before an early flight, business meetings, visiting family or medical appointments. Because the BTS Skytrain runs above Sukhumvit Road, staying here makes it easy to explore the rest of Bangkok once you have arrived without needing a car. Arriving by private car also means no wrestling with luggage on the Skytrain stairs or searching for a meter taxi at a bus terminal at the end of a long day.

- Thong Lo and Ekkamai for cafés, bars and restaurants

The road between Hua Hin and Sukhumvit
The drive between Hua Hin and Sukhumvit follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) north through Cha-am and Phetchaburi, then switches to Rama II Road (Highway 35) through Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon towards Bangkok. Once in the city, drivers usually take the expressway network to reach Sukhumvit, which avoids much of the stop-start traffic at street level. The highway sections flow well most of the time, but Rama II has long-running roadworks and heavy truck traffic, and the final stretch inside Bangkok can be slow during rush hours, so timings vary more at the city end than anywhere else.
Good places to stop on the way
- Cha-am, for a coffee by the beach road
- Phetchaburi, known for its traditional Thai desserts
- Maeklong Railway Market in Samut Songkhram
- Amphawa Floating Market (best in the late afternoon at weekends)
- Roadside service areas on Rama II Road
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Sukhumvit
The cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for exploring Bangkok on foot. For the drive itself, avoid arriving in central Bangkok during the weekday morning and evening rush. Sunday afternoons and the end of long weekends bring heavy traffic heading back into the capital from the coast, while Songkran in April and New Year see large movements of people leaving and returning to the city.
Travel tip for Sukhumvit
Give us your hotel name and soi number; we drop you at the door instead of the Ekkamai bus terminal.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
Choose your car
