About Khao San Road
Khao San Road and Rattanakosin island are the old-town side of Bangkok, close to the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.
Khao San Road began as a backpacker street in the 1980s and is still the most famous traveller hub in Thailand. By day it is a strip of guesthouses, tailors, travel agents and cheap cafés; after dark it fills with street food carts, bars, music and crowds of visitors from every corner of the world. The surrounding lanes, especially Soi Rambuttri, are quieter and leafier, with small hotels and massage shops.
People travel between Hua Hin and Khao San for several reasons: backpackers heading south to the beach after a few nights in Bangkok, families who want to stay near the old-town temples, and Hua Hin residents meeting friends or catching a flight after a city stopover. Because the area sits far from the Skytrain, a door-to-door car is far easier than juggling buses, taxis and luggage through the old town.
Things to see and do in Khao San Road

- Democracy Monument on Ratchadamnoen Avenue
- The Golden Mount (Wat Saket) with views over the old city

The road between Hua Hin and Khao San Road
The drive between Hua Hin and Khao San Road follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) north through Cha-am to Phetchaburi, then switches to Rama II Road (Highway 35) through Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon into the south-western edge of Bangkok. From there the driver normally uses the expressway or crosses the Chao Phraya into Rattanakosin and Banglamphu. The highway sections are generally smooth, but Rama II has long-running roadworks and the last stretch into the old town can be slow at rush hour, particularly on weekday mornings and Friday evenings.
Good places to stop on the way
- Cha-am beach and its seafood restaurants
- Phra Nakhon Khiri (Khao Wang) in Phetchaburi
- Phetchaburi town for khanom mor kaeng custard desserts
- Maeklong Railway Market in Samut Songkhram
- Mahachai seafood market in Samut Sakhon
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Khao San Road
Khao San is lively all year, but the cool, dry months from November to February are the most comfortable for walking around the old town. Songkran in mid-April turns the street into a giant water fight, so pack valuables in waterproof bags and expect closures. For the road, mid-morning or early afternoon departures avoid the worst Bangkok traffic; long weekends bring heavy traffic on Rama II in both directions.
Travel tip for Khao San Road
Khao San is pedestrian at night; the driver meets you at the nearest street corner, which we agree when you book.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
