About Koh Tao
Koh Tao is the diving island of the Gulf, about 1.5–2 hours by catamaran from Chumphon.
Koh Tao is a small, hilly island in the Gulf of Thailand, famous worldwide as one of the most popular places to learn to scuba dive. Its granite boulders, coral reefs and clear water draw divers, snorkellers and backpackers, while viewpoints and quiet coves suit couples and anyone who wants a relaxed island break. Sairee Beach is the liveliest area, and Mae Haad is the main pier village.
Travellers from Hua Hin head to Koh Tao for dive courses, snorkelling and island hopping. The easiest connection is by road to Chumphon on the mainland and then by high-speed catamaran across the Gulf. A private car to the pier avoids early buses and lets you carry dive gear and luggage without changes. Many travellers continue afterwards to Koh Phangan or Koh Samui by boat, so planning the mainland leg well makes the whole island trip smoother.
Things to see and do in Koh Tao
- Sairee Beach, the island’s longest beach and main social hub
- Koh Nang Yuan, three islets joined by sandbars, just offshore
- Shark Bay and Aow Leuk for snorkelling from the shore
- John-Suwan Viewpoint over Chalok Baan Kao and Tanote bays
- Open Water and advanced dive courses at the many dive schools
- Tanote Bay for snorkelling and calm water
- Mae Haad pier village for cafés and restaurants

Ferry connection
From the island, take the ferry or boat back to Chumphon pier. Tell us which boat you are on and your driver will be waiting at the pier for the drive to Hua Hin.
The road between Hua Hin and Koh Tao
The drive between Hua Hin and the Chumphon ferry piers follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) south along the narrow neck of Thailand. The highway passes Pranburi, Kui Buri and Prachuap Khiri Khan, then continues through Thap Sakae and the Bang Saphan area before reaching Chumphon province. Different boat companies use different piers on the Chumphon coast, so the driver needs to know which operator you have booked. From the pier, the boat leg to Koh Tao is separate. Traffic on this stretch is generally light.
Good places to stop on the way
- Prachuap Khiri Khan and its bay
- Thap Sakae, a quiet coastal town on the highway
- Bang Saphan, with long uncrowded beaches
- Chumphon town for food before the boat
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Koh Tao
Koh Tao’s best weather is usually from about March to September, with calm seas and good visibility for diving. Rough seas are most likely in the north-east monsoon around October to December, when boats can be delayed or cancelled. Plan the drive to reach the pier well before departure. Check the latest ferry times and the forecast before you travel. Morning boats generally face calmer water than afternoon ones.
Travel tip for Koh Tao
Book the catamaran for the late-morning departure and we pick you up in Hua Hin around 6–7 am.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Flights and buses usually mean several changes plus a separate transfer to the pier. With a private car you leave from your hotel door and arrive at the pier with your luggage, on your schedule.
Choose your car
