About Phuket
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island, linked by bridge to the mainland — no ferry needed.
Phuket is Thailand’s biggest island and its most developed beach destination, with lively Patong, family-friendly Kata and Karon, quieter northern beaches and a colourful Old Town of Sino-Portuguese shophouses. It is also the hub for boat trips to Phang Nga Bay, the Phi Phi islands and the Similans. Beyond the beaches, the island has a strong local culture, with Chinese shrines, vegetarian festival traditions and excellent southern Thai food.
Families and groups travel between Hua Hin and Phuket to combine a Gulf coast stay with the Andaman Sea, or to reach Phuket’s international airport. Going by road lets you bring plenty of luggage, stop at sights along the way, and arrive directly at your hotel, since the Sarasin Bridge links the island to the mainland. For a large family or group, a single van can be more relaxing than coordinating flights, airport transfers and baggage allowances for everyone.

The road between Hua Hin and Phuket
The drive between Hua Hin and Phuket is a long trip south along Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon. From there drivers either continue down the Andaman side through Ranong, Takua Pa and Khao Lak, or take Highway 41 and Highway 401 inland via Surat Thani and Khao Sok, rejoining near Takua Pa. The final section crosses onto Phuket by bridge. Highways are generally good, with hilly, winding stretches on the west coast and occasional heavy rain in the monsoon.
Good places to stop on the way
- Chumphon
- Ranong, known for its hot springs
- Khao Sok National Park
- Khao Lak’s beaches
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Phuket
Phuket’s high season runs from November to April, with calm seas and sunshine. From May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rough seas, and some beaches fly red flags for strong currents. Leave Hua Hin early to arrive before dark, or split the trip with a night in Khao Sok or Khao Lak. The Phuket Vegetarian Festival, usually around October, draws large crowds to the Old Town.
Travel tip for Phuket
A van for a family or group is often cheaper than flights via Bangkok once luggage is counted.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin
Buses and minivans run on fixed timetables from bus terminals, often with a change in Bangkok. A private car goes door to door, so you arrive at your resort without carrying bags between stations.
Choose your car
Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
