About Koh Samui

Koh Samui is the Gulf’s largest island resort, reached by car ferry from Don Sak (about 1.5 hours).

Koh Samui is the Gulf of Thailand’s best-known resort island, with palm-fringed bays, international restaurants and a wide choice of hotels from beach bungalows to luxury villas. Busy Chaweng and Lamai sit on the east coast, while Bophut, Mae Nam and the south and west coasts feel calmer. Inland, the island rises to jungle-covered hills with waterfalls, viewpoints and coconut plantations, giving it far more variety than its beach reputation suggests.

Families, couples and groups travel between Hua Hin and Samui to continue a Thailand holiday on an island, often with plenty of luggage. Driving south and taking the car ferry is a practical alternative to flying for groups or families, and it opens the way to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao as well. Arriving by road and ferry also lets you keep bulky luggage, surfboards or golf clubs with you, avoiding airline baggage limits and the cost of several flights.

Things to see and do in Koh Samui

  • Chaweng Beach, the island’s liveliest stretch
  • Lamai Beach and the Hin Ta Hin Yai rock formations
  • Big Buddha (Wat Phra Yai) on its small islet
  • Fisherman’s Village in Bophut, with its walking street
  • Na Muang waterfalls inland
  • Boat trips to Ang Thong Marine National Park
  • Ferries onwards to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao

What’s included in your Koh Samui to Hua Hin transfer

  • A private car or van for your group only — no sharing, no extra pickups
  • Pickup at your hotel, villa or address in Koh Samui
  • Drop-off at Don Sak Pier, Surat Thani
  • Fuel and expressway tolls included in the price
  • Toilet, food and photo stops on request

Ferry connection

From the island, take the ferry or boat back to Don Sak Pier, Surat Thani. Tell us which boat you are on and your driver will be waiting at the pier for the drive to Hua Hin.

The road between Hua Hin and Koh Samui

The drive between Hua Hin and Koh Samui runs south on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) through Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and the Bang Saphan area to Chumphon, then continues on Highway 41 towards Surat Thani. From there the route heads east to Don Sak Pier, where car ferries cross to Samui; check the latest ferry times and allow a buffer for the connection. The highways are wide and well maintained, with traffic mostly trucks and coaches; slower stretches occur through towns.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Prachuap Khiri Khan and Ao Manao
  • Chumphon, a common lunch stop
  • Chaiya, with its ancient Srivijaya-era temple
  • Surat Thani town

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Koh Samui

Samui’s best weather usually runs from January to August. October to December is the island’s main rainy season, when seas can be rougher and ferries occasionally disrupted. Starting early in the morning gives you time to make an afternoon ferry. Thai long weekends make the ferries busier, so build in extra time. The Gulf islands often stay drier in the middle of the year than the Andaman coast.

Travel tip for Koh Samui

Driving to Don Sak and taking the ferry is often cheaper for a group than flights, and luggage is not a problem.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin

Flights and buses usually mean several changes plus a separate transfer to the pier. With a private car you leave from your hotel door and arrive at the pier with your luggage, on your schedule.

Choose your car

Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
