About Chumphon Port
Chumphon is the gateway to Koh Tao by high-speed catamaran and has its own quiet beaches.
Chumphon is the province where southern Thailand properly begins. Its town is a working provincial centre, but the coast nearby has quiet beaches such as Thung Wua Laen and Sairee, and several piers from which high-speed catamarans and other boats cross the Gulf to Koh Tao, with onward connections to Koh Phangan and Koh Samui. The town itself makes a practical overnight stop, with markets, simple hotels and good southern food.
Most travellers come from Hua Hin to Chumphon to catch a boat to Koh Tao for diving or snorkelling, or arrive back on the mainland and want a straightforward ride north. Others enjoy a night or two on Chumphon’s beaches, which are much less developed than the islands. A private car lets you reach the right pier on time, without relying on a bus connection that may not match the boat. Divers often break the journey here to rest before a busy island week.

The road between Hua Hin and Chumphon Port
The drive between Hua Hin and Chumphon follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) south the whole way, through Pranburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thap Sakae and past the turn-offs for Bang Saphan and Pathiu. Near Chumphon the driver leaves the highway for local roads to the town, a beach or the relevant pier. The road is wide and well surfaced, with steady truck and bus traffic. Allow extra time for the pier, as boarding and luggage handling start well before departure. Southern-style roadside restaurants make good meal stops.
Good places to stop on the way
- Prachuap Khiri Khan and Ao Manao
- Thap Sakae for coffee and a stretch
- Bang Saphan coast
- Pathiu district and its quiet beaches
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Chumphon Port
The Gulf is calmest from roughly February to September, which suits the boat crossing to Koh Tao. Rough seas, most likely around November and December, can delay or cancel boats, so keep your plans flexible. For an early morning catamaran, many travellers leave Hua Hin before dawn or stay a night in Chumphon. Holiday periods fill boats quickly.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Chumphon Port
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
