About Koh Phangan
Koh Phangan is known for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin and quiet bays in the north.
Koh Phangan sits in the Gulf of Thailand between Koh Samui and Koh Tao. It is famous for the Full Moon Party at Haad Rin, yet most of the island is calm: jungle-covered hills, yoga and wellness retreats, and sheltered bays in the north and west such as Thong Nai Pan and Haad Salad. Accommodation ranges from simple beach bungalows to boutique resorts and villas.
Travellers go between Hua Hin and Koh Phangan to start or finish an island holiday, whether for parties, diving, yoga or simply a quiet beach. Travelling by road to Don Sak Pier, east of Surat Thani, and taking the ferry across is a practical alternative to flying, especially for groups with luggage. A private car takes away the stress of bus connections on a long journey. Returning travellers often time the ferry to arrive back on the mainland by afternoon.

The road between Hua Hin and Koh Phangan
The drive between Hua Hin and Don Sak Pier follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) south through Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon, then continues on Highway 41 towards Surat Thani before heading east to Don Sak on the coast. From the pier, ferries cross to Koh Phangan, sometimes calling at Koh Samui on the way. The road is long but good, on wide highways for most of the way. The ferry leg depends on the operator and the sea, so check the latest ferry times and allow a buffer before departure. Large petrol stations provide good rest stops.
