About Ranong
Ranong has hot springs and boats to Koh Phayam and Koh Chang Noi on the Andaman side.
Ranong is a small, rainy, green province on Thailand’s Andaman coast, facing Kawthaung in Myanmar across the estuary of the Kraburi river. The town is known for natural hot springs, mountains covered in forest, and a relaxed provincial feel, and its piers serve the quiet islands of Koh Phayam and Koh Chang Noi. Its rain-fed forests and waterfalls stay green for most of the year, and it is often called the rainiest province in Thailand.
From Hua Hin, travellers head to Ranong for the islands, for the hot springs, or to cross from the Gulf coast to the Andaman side without going via Phuket. Long-stay residents sometimes visit for border matters, and divers use it to join liveaboard trips. A private car is by far the simplest way across the hills, as bus connections involve changing in Chumphon. Visitors returning from the islands often spend a night in town before driving north.

The road between Hua Hin and Ranong
The drive between Hua Hin and Ranong follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) south through Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon, where the highway turns west and climbs across the Kra Isthmus to Kra Buri and down to Ranong. The first part is flat coastal highway; the second is a winding road through forested hills with views of the river border with Myanmar. Traffic is light on the cross-peninsula section, but bends and rain can make it slower, so the driver will not rush it.

- Prachuap Khiri Khan
- Chumphon town for lunch
- Kra Isthmus viewpoint near Kra Buri
- Punyaban Waterfall just before Ranong town
Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.
Best time to travel to Ranong
Ranong is one of the wettest places in Thailand, with heavy rain from roughly May to October; island boats run less often then. November to April is drier and the best time for Koh Phayam. Driving the hill section in daylight is recommended for the views and safety. Thai holidays bring more traffic to the hot springs and piers. Bring a light rain jacket whatever the season.
Travel tip for Ranong
The road crosses the peninsula through green hills — one of the prettiest drives south.
Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Ranong
Trains and buses connect many Thai cities, but they leave from stations outside the centre and rarely match flight or check-in times. A private car takes you from hotel to hotel.
