About Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a relaxed Andaman island reached by one short car ferry and a bridge, so the car can drive you all the way.

Koh Lanta is a long island off Krabi province with a string of sandy beaches along its west coast, a mangrove-lined east coast and a forested interior. It is known for its relaxed pace, family-friendly resorts and easy access to snorkelling trips around Koh Rok and Koh Haa. Lanta Old Town, on the east side, keeps its wooden stilt houses over the water.

Travellers from Hua Hin go to Lanta for a longer island stay on the Andaman Sea, usually in the dry season. It suits families, couples and long-stay visitors who want quiet beaches rather than nightlife. Because a car can cross by ferry, you can travel the whole way with your luggage in one vehicle. The island is also a good base for day trips to Krabi’s limestone coast and the islands of Trang province to the south.

Things to see and do in Koh Lanta

  • Long Beach (Phra Ae) and Klong Dao on the west coast
  • Mu Ko Lanta National Park at the island’s southern tip
  • Lanta Old Town with its wooden houses on stilts
  • Snorkelling trips to Koh Rok and Koh Haa
  • Kantiang Bay and Bamboo Bay in the south
  • Sunset viewpoints along the west coast
  • Mangrove kayaking on the east coast

The road between Hua Hin and Koh Lanta

The drive between Hua Hin and Koh Lanta is one of the longest road trips we cover. It follows Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) south past Prachuap Khiri Khan to Chumphon, then continues through Surat Thani province and across to Krabi province. Near the end it turns off towards the coast to the village of Ban Hua Hin, where a short car ferry carries the vehicle across to Koh Lanta Noi, and a bridge links Lanta Noi to the main island, Lanta Yai. Check the latest ferry times, and expect queues at the pier in high season.

Good places to stop on the way

  • Prachuap Khiri Khan, early in the drive
  • Chumphon, around the halfway point
  • Surat Thani area for a meal break
  • Krabi town, if you want to see the Andaman coast before the ferry

Toilet and food stops are free. Sightseeing stops at attractions are 500 THB each — add them in the booking notes.

Best time to travel to Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta’s high season runs roughly from November to April, with calm seas and sunny days. From about May to October the south-west monsoon brings rain and rougher seas, and some resorts close for part of that period. Because the trip is long, an early start or an overnight stop is sensible. The ferries are busiest around Christmas, New Year and Songkran. Sunsets on the west coast are a highlight in the dry months.

Travel tip for Koh Lanta

Funny coincidence: the Lanta car ferry leaves from a village also called Hua Hin, in Krabi.

Taxi vs. bus, train or flight to Hua Hin

Flights and buses usually mean several changes plus a separate transfer to the pier. With a private car you leave from your hotel door and arrive at the pier with your luggage, on your schedule.

Choose your car

Sedans suit one to three travellers, MPVs and SUVs four, and VIP vans up to eight with luggage. For long trips a van gives everyone more room to stretch out.
